Natural Language Processing Engineer
Language AI systems
What this life looks like
You teach computers to understand and generate human language. NLP Engineers build the AI systems behind chatbots, translation tools, voice assistants, search engines, and text analysis systems. For Africa — with over 2,000 languages — this field has extraordinary significance.
What she actually does
You build language models and text classification systems, develop machine translation systems between languages, create speech recognition and synthesis systems, build question-answering and dialogue systems, process large text corpora for analysis, work on sentiment analysis and information extraction, and deploy NLP models into real-world applications.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| African Language AI | Masakhane (open research), Africa's Talking (SMS/voice APIs), Lelapa AI |
| Tech Platforms | Google (Swahili/Hausa voice search), Microsoft (African language support teams) |
| Fintech & Telecoms | Chatbot and customer service AI teams at MTN, Flutterwave, Equity Bank |
| Media & Government | African language news platforms, government digital service chatbots |
Why it matters in Africa
Africa's linguistic diversity — over 2,000 languages, most with very little digital representation — means African language speakers are excluded from the benefits of language technology. NLP engineers building for Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, Amharic, and other African languages are doing work that is transformative and unique to this continent.
Your pathway in
- Build programming skills in Python and learn machine learning fundamentals
- Study Computer Science, Linguistics, or Mathematics at university
- Learn NLP frameworks including Hugging Face Transformers, spaCy, and NLTK
- Engage with the Masakhane community, which focuses specifically on African language NLP
- Build projects that process text in an African language — even a simple one demonstrates commitment
Skills you will need
- Python and NLP frameworks (Hugging Face, spaCy)
- Machine learning and deep learning
- Linguistic knowledge basics
- Data collection and annotation
- Model fine-tuning and evaluation
- African language knowledge (a major advantage)
A woman in this field
Jade Abbott
South Africa
Jade is a machine learning engineer and co-founder of Masakhane, which has pioneered NLP research for African languages. Her work has enabled machine translation, language identification, and other language technologies for dozens of African languages — from Zulu and Swahili to Amharic and Twi — that were previously unrepresented in global AI.
