What this life looks like
You build systems that learn. Machine Learning Engineers design, train, and deploy the AI models that power recommendation systems, fraud detection, image recognition, voice assistants, and predictive analytics. It is one of the most in-demand and highest-paying technical specialisations in the world.
What she actually does
You work with data scientists to take machine learning models from experiment to production. You write code to train models on large datasets, optimize model performance, build the infrastructure to run models at scale, monitor deployed models for accuracy, and ensure AI systems work reliably in real-world environments. You use frameworks including TensorFlow, PyTorch, and scikit-learn.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| AI Startups & Research | Lelapa AI (South Africa), Instadeep (Tunisia/London), DataProphet (South Africa) |
| Banks & Fintech | First National Bank, Capitec, Paystack — fraud detection and credit scoring teams |
| International Research | Google DeepMind (Africa office), Microsoft Research Africa, Meta AI |
| Health & AgriTech | Ubenwa, Farmerline, Apollo Agriculture — ML for health and farming applications |
Why it matters in Africa
African companies are beginning to apply machine learning to uniquely African challenges — from crop disease detection using phone cameras, to credit scoring for unbanked populations, to traffic optimization in congested cities. Machine learning engineers who understand these contexts are building transformative solutions.

A woman in this field
Jade Abbott
South Africa
Jade is a machine learning engineer and co-founder of Masakhane, a grassroots NLP research organisation focused on African languages. Her work has brought natural language processing to dozens of African languages that were previously ignored by mainstream AI research. She is one of the most widely cited African AI researchers and has presented at top international ML conferences.
