Artificial Intelligence Researcher

Academic AI research

What this life looks like

You push the boundaries of what machines can do. AI Researchers work at the frontier of computer science, developing new algorithms, theories, and techniques that form the foundation of tomorrow's intelligent systems. It is one of the most intellectually demanding fields in existence.

What she actually does

You read and reproduce cutting-edge research papers, design experiments to test new AI hypotheses, write and run code to validate your ideas, publish research findings in academic journals and conferences, collaborate with other researchers globally, and work to advance the fundamental understanding of how machines can learn, reason, and perceive.

Where you can work

SectorPlaces in Africa
African Research OrganisationsMasakhane, Deep Learning Indaba, AMMI (African Master of Machine Intelligence)
University Research LabsWits AI Research group, UCT ML lab, AIMS research centres across Africa
Industry Research LabsGoogle DeepMind (has African researchers), Microsoft Research Africa (Nairobi & Lagos)
International InstitutionsMontreal AI Ethics Institute, DAIR Institute, UN AI advisory bodies

Why it matters in Africa

Africa is underrepresented in global AI research, which means AI systems are often built without African data, languages, or contexts. African AI researchers are critically needed to ensure the continent is not left behind in the AI revolution and that AI systems work fairly and accurately for African people.

Your pathway in

  • Excel in Mathematics — particularly calculus, linear algebra, and probability — at school and university
  • Study Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field with strong research focus at a top university
  • Aim for a Master's degree and eventually a PhD in Machine Learning, AI, or Computer Science
  • Engage with the research community through Deep Learning Indaba, AMMI, and reading arXiv papers
  • Publish research, even as a student, through workshops and smaller conferences

Skills you will need

  • Advanced mathematics and statistics
  • Deep learning theory and practice
  • Research paper reading and writing
  • Python and research frameworks
  • Critical thinking and hypothesis design
  • Academic communication and publishing

A woman in this field

Timnit Gebru

Ethiopia

Timnit is an Ethiopian AI researcher and founder of the DAIR Institute (Distributed AI Research Institute). She was previously a research scientist at Google Brain and co-authored the Stochastic Parrots paper that sparked global debate about large language models. She is one of the world's most prominent voices on AI ethics and bias, particularly in relation to African and marginalised communities.

Take your first step

  • Join the Deep Learning Indaba community and follow their annual school and workshops at deeplearningindaba.com
  • Read accessible AI research summaries on Papers With Code at paperswithcode.com
  • Try implementing a research paper in Python — even a simple one builds research intuition
  • Look into the African Master of Machine Intelligence (AMMI) programme at aimsammi.org
