Architect

Building design and planning

What this life looks like

You design the built world. Architects conceive and design buildings — from private homes to hospitals to airports to masterplanned cities. Architecture is simultaneously an art, a technical discipline, and a social act — shaping how millions of people live, work, worship, learn, and gather. Africa's building boom, driven by population growth and urbanisation, makes this one of the most impactful careers on the continent.

What she actually does

You take a client's brief, develop design concepts, produce architectural drawings and 3D models, manage planning applications, coordinate with structural and services engineers, develop detailed construction drawings, oversee the construction process, and deliver a completed building. You balance aesthetic vision with structural reality, environmental responsibility, and client budget throughout.

Why it matters in Africa

Africa's cities are growing at extraordinary speed. Housing, infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings are being constructed across the continent in enormous volumes. African architects who design contextually appropriate, climatically responsive, and culturally resonant buildings for African communities are essential to this development — and the opportunity to shape the built environment of a continent at this scale does not exist anywhere else.

Your pathway in

  • Study Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch) — a five to seven year qualification in most countries
  • Develop technical drawing and modelling skills: AutoCAD, Revit, and Rhino are the core architectural software tools
  • Complete your professional internship and registration with your country's architectural council (SACAP in SA, ARCON in Nigeria)
  • Consider postgraduate specialisation in sustainable design, housing, or urban design — all high-demand areas in Africa
  • Develop deep contextual knowledge of African climate, materials, and construction methods

Skills you will need

  • Architectural design
  • Technical drawing (AutoCAD, Revit)
  • Structural and environmental understanding
  • Project management
  • Planning and regulatory knowledge
  • Communication with clients and contractors

A woman in this field

Mariam Issoufou (Kamara)

Niger

Mariam Issoufou is a world-renowned Nigerien architect and a global pioneer in sustainable, culturally conscious, and context-driven architecture. After a successful seven-year first career as a computer engineer with degrees from Purdue University and NYU, she pivoted to architecture, earning her Master's degree from the University of Washington. In 2014, she established her architecture and research firm, Mariam Issoufou Architects (formerly Atelier Masomi), based in Niamey, with branches expanding internationally to New York and Zurich. Her award-winning portfolio includes the Hikma Community Complex (a library and mosque integrated space) and the Dandaji Regional Market in Niger. Her designs focus heavily on open living spaces and the structural utilization of locally manufactured materials like raw earth, stabilized clay, and recycled metals. She is a full professor of Architectural Heritage and Sustainability at ETH Zurich and was named a UN Champion of the Earth.

Take your first step

  • Sketch the building you live or study in from outside — drawing existing buildings develops architectural observation
  • Download SketchUp for free and model a simple building — understanding 3D space is foundational to architectural design
  • Research architecture schools in your country and their admission requirements — architecture is competitive and preparation matters
  • Visit an architect's office in your city and ask for a career conversation — most architects are generous with their time for students who show genuine interest
