Real Estate Developer

Property development and investment

What this life looks like

You build the physical infrastructure of cities and communities. Real Estate Developers identify land, secure financing, manage construction, and create residential, commercial, or industrial properties that people live in, work in, and shop at. Africa's rapid urbanisation — the fastest in the world — is creating enormous demand for housing, offices, retail centres, and logistics facilities.

What she actually does

You identify development sites, conduct feasibility studies, secure financing from banks and investors, obtain planning permissions, appoint architects and contractors, manage construction to budget and schedule, market and sell or lease completed units, and manage assets over time. It is a high-risk, high-reward career that combines finance, construction, legal, and sales expertise.

Why it matters in Africa

Africa will add 1 billion urban residents by 2050 — the equivalent of building a new city the size of London every few months. The housing deficit across Sub-Saharan Africa is estimated at over 50 million units. This is one of the greatest development challenges and investment opportunities on the continent.
