Mortgage Advisor

Home financing guidance

What this life looks like

You help people finance the homes of their dreams. Mortgage Advisors guide individuals and families through the process of securing home loans — assessing their financial situation, identifying suitable mortgage products, submitting applications, and supporting clients from approval through to completion. In Africa, where home ownership aspirations are high but mortgage markets are underdeveloped, this profession is critically important.

What she actually does

You meet clients, understand their financial situation and property ambitions, assess their borrowing capacity, research available mortgage products across lenders, advise on the most suitable option, help prepare the application, liaise with banks and property lawyers during the process, and guide clients through to loan completion and disbursement.

Why it matters in Africa

Africa's mortgage markets are among the least developed in the world — less than 5% of Africans have a mortgage, compared to 60--70% home ownership through mortgage finance in developed markets. As national housing finance corporations, development banks, and commercial banks expand housing loan products, demand for mortgage advisers is growing significantly.

  • Visit the website of a bank offering mortgages in your country and read through their home loan product brochure
  • Study the Centre for Affordable Housing Finance Africa (CAHF) annual housing finance report at housingfinanceafrica.org
