Theatre Director

Stage production direction

What this life looks like

You bring stories to life on stage. Theatre Directors are the creative leaders of theatrical productions — interpreting scripts, working with actors to develop performances, collaborating with designers to create the visual world of the production, and shaping every element of what an audience experiences in the theatre. Africa's theatre tradition is one of the continent's oldest and most vital art forms.

What she actually does

You choose or commission a script, develop a directorial concept, cast the production, lead rehearsals — working with actors to develop their characters and performances — collaborate with set, costume, lighting, and sound designers, manage the production schedule and budget, and oversee technical rehearsals and the final run of performances.

Why it matters in Africa

African theatre has a powerful tradition of political and social engagement: from Wole Soyinka's Nobel Prize-winning drama to Athol Fugard's apartheid-era plays to the vibrant contemporary theatre scenes in Lagos, Johannesburg, Nairobi, and Accra. Theatre companies, arts festivals, and university drama departments all create work that reflects African realities and challenges audiences to think differently.

A woman in this field

Zodwa Nyoni

Zimbabwe/UK

Zodwa is a Zimbabwean playwright and director whose work explores African identity, migration, and belonging on British and international stages. Her plays have been produced at the National Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse, and across the UK and internationally, and she has directed productions at major theatre institutions. Her career demonstrates that African women who combine sharp playwriting with directorial vision can shape theatre at the highest international levels.

Take your first step

  • Direct a short scene — gather two or three friends, choose a scene from a play or write your own, and direct it. Experiencing the fundamentals of directing actors is immediate and revealing
  • Read Wole Soyinka's 'Death and the King's Horseman,' Athol Fugard's 'Sizwe Bansi Is Dead,' and a contemporary African playwright — these are the traditions you are entering
  • Research the Market Theatre in Johannesburg at market.co.za — it is one of Africa's most important theatre institutions and its history is a masterclass in political theatre
  • Attend as much live theatre as possible — understanding what works in performance, what moves audiences, and what falls flat is learned through watching
