Clothing for film, theatre, and TV

What this life looks like

You dress the story. Costume Designers create the clothing worn by actors in films, television productions, theatre, and live events — using clothes to communicate character, period, culture, and emotion. In Africa's booming screen and stage industries, costume designers play a vital role in building the authentic visual world of African stories.

What she actually does

You read the script and develop a costume concept with the director, research the historical period or cultural context, design or source costumes for each character, manage costume fittings with actors, organise and maintain the costume department, manage the costume budget, supervise wardrobe assistants on set, and ensure continuity of costume across all scenes.

A woman in this field

Yolanda Okereke

Nigeria

Yolanda Okereke is a visionary fashion entrepreneur, creative producer, and one of Nollywood's most influential and respected costume designers. Over a career spanning more than a decade, she has shaped the cinematic visual narratives of some of Africa's biggest film and television productions. She is the founder of The Rani Company (a premier costume design and styling firm) and The Wardrobe Shack. Her extensive professional credits include designing the intricate wardrobes for critically acclaimed Netflix originals and blockbuster feature films such as Blood Sisters, King of Boys, Òlòtūré, House of Ga'a, and The Wedding Party. Notably, she made history as the first African costume designer invited to host a specialized masterclass on storytelling through fabric at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C.

Take your first step

  • Watch a Nollywood film and a Hollywood film back-to-back — study how costume choices communicate character and period in each
  • Research the history of dress in your cultural community — what did people wear for ceremonies, work, and celebration? This is essential research for costume design
  • Volunteer as a wardrobe assistant for a school or community theatre production — practical experience is the best education
  • Study the work of Ruth Carter, the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Costume Design (for 'Black Panther') — her interviews explain the design process in detail
