Structural Engineer
Building and bridge structural integrity
What this life looks like
You ensure that buildings and structures stand safely. Structural Engineers design the bones of our built environment — the frames, foundations, and load-bearing elements that keep bridges, buildings, dams, and towers standing against gravity, wind, earthquakes, and the weight of everything inside them.
What she actually does
You analyse the forces acting on structures, design structural members including beams, columns, slabs, and foundations, produce structural drawings and specifications, review architectural designs for structural feasibility, supervise construction to ensure design is executed correctly, and investigate structural failures or assess the condition of existing structures.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| Structural Consulting Firms | Zutari (formerly Aurecon SA), SMEC Africa, BVI Consulting Engineers |
| Construction Companies | Murray & Roberts, Concor, Wbho Construction — on-site structural engineering |
| Government Infrastructure | Public works departments and transport infrastructure agencies |
| International Development | AECOM Africa, GHD, Atkins — large infrastructure project teams |
Why it matters in Africa
Africa's rapidly growing cities need millions of buildings, bridges, and infrastructure works. Building collapses remain tragically common across Africa due to inadequate structural engineering. Skilled structural engineers who understand local materials, soil conditions, and climate are essential for safe, sustainable construction.

A woman in this field
Zeenat Ghoor
South Africa
Zeenat is a qualified civil and structural engineer who founded Aspire Consulting Engineers in South Africa in 2015. After eight years in the construction industry where she experienced a difficult working environment for women, she built her own firm committed to making engineering more humane and inclusive. She won the Standard Bank Top Woman Award in 2019 and has been recognised for transforming the face of the South African construction sector.
