Mechanical Engineer

Machines and mechanical systems

What this life looks like

You design and build the machines that power industry and daily life. Mechanical Engineers work on everything from engines and turbines to manufacturing equipment, medical devices, agricultural machinery, and climate control systems. It is one of the broadest and most versatile engineering disciplines.

What she actually does

You design mechanical components and systems using CAD software, analyse stress and thermal performance, prototype and test designs, oversee manufacturing processes, troubleshoot mechanical failures, and ensure products meet safety and performance standards. You might design agricultural equipment for African farmers, maintenance systems for industrial plants, or components for vehicles.

Where you can work

SectorPlaces in Africa
ManufacturingDangote Cement, Lafarge Africa, East African Breweries — plant mechanical engineering
Oil & GasShell Nigeria, TotalEnergies, NNPC — mechanical systems in refineries and gas plants
MiningAnglo American, De Beers, Sibanye-Stillwater — mechanical maintenance and systems engineering
Agricultural EquipmentCNH Industrial Africa, John Deere Africa — farm equipment support and engineering

Why it matters in Africa

Africa's industrialisation push — driven by manufacturing zones in Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya — requires mechanical engineers to design and maintain production facilities. Agricultural mechanisation, renewable energy equipment, and water pumping systems also create strong demand across the continent.

Your pathway in

  • Excel in Mathematics and Physics at secondary school
  • Study Mechanical Engineering at university — typically a five-year programme
  • Learn CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD during your degree
  • Complete industrial attachments at manufacturing plants or engineering firms
  • Consider specialisations in manufacturing, automotive, or energy systems

Skills you will need

  • CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
  • Thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
  • Materials science
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Project management
  • Technical report writing

A woman in this field

Nneile Nkholise

South Africa

Nneile launched her career in 2011 as a mechanical engineer at the Free State's Public Works Department before founding iMed Tech Group in 2015, a biotech company using CAD and additive manufacturing to create custom medical solutions for African patients. She was recognised in Forbes 30 Under 30 for 2018 and received the South African Youth Award for Science, Innovation, and Technology in 2017.

Take your first step
