Sound Engineer

Audio recording and mixing

What this life looks like

You make everything sound perfect. Sound Engineers record, mix, and master audio — working in recording studios, live events, television and radio production, and film post-production to ensure that the audio content audiences hear is clear, balanced, and compelling. In Africa's booming music and media industries, skilled sound engineers are in constant demand.

What she actually does

In studios, you operate the mixing console and recording equipment, place microphones for optimal recording, manage digital audio sessions, mix multiple audio tracks into a balanced final mix, and master audio for release. In live sound, you manage the front-of-house mix and monitor mixes during concerts and events. In post-production, you edit dialogue, design sound effects, and mix the audio for film or television.

Where you can work

SectorPlaces in Africa
Recording StudiosStudios across Lagos, Accra, Nairobi, Cape Town, and Johannesburg — Africa's music hubs
Live EventsConcert production companies, festival technical crews, corporate event production across Africa
Television & RadioSABC, NTA, KTN, Africa Magic — all employ in-house audio engineers for their productions
Film Post-ProductionPost-production houses in South Africa and Nigeria handling film and TV audio post-production

Why it matters in Africa

Africa's music production industry is growing rapidly — every recording studio, music label, and production company needs skilled engineers. The live music industry — from Lagos Countdown concerts to the Felabration festival to Cape Town Jazz Festival — creates significant live sound work. Film and television production require audio post-production professionals. It is a technically specialised, practically learned career with excellent employment prospects.

Your pathway in

  • Study Sound Engineering or Audio Production at a technical college or music school — SAE Institute has campuses across Africa
  • Learn the fundamentals: microphone technique, signal flow, EQ, compression, reverb, and mixing on digital audio workstations
  • Intern or assist at a recording studio — most studio engineers learn by starting as a studio assistant
  • Develop proficiency in Pro Tools and Logic Pro — the industry-standard DAWs for professional recording and post-production
  • Build a portfolio of mixing work and develop your sound through constant practice

Skills you will need

  • Pro Tools / Logic Pro
  • Microphone technique
  • EQ, compression, and mixing
  • Live sound operation
  • Digital audio workstations
  • Critical listening

A woman in this field

Phebean "Febe" Oluwagbemi

Nigeria

Phebean (popularly known as Febe) is an accomplished Nigerian live sound, recording, and mixing engineer who has carved out a distinct path in the highly male-dominated audio engineering space. With deep technical mastery over digital mixing consoles, signal routing, and concert sound setups, she has engineered major live performances and managed high-pressure studio sessions. Dedicated to balancing the scales in the industry, Febe also plays a pivotal leadership role at Audio Girl Africa (Audio Girl Foundation)—a prominent non-profit organization focused on training, mentoring, and equipping young African women with practical studio engineering, music production, and audio technology skills.

Take your first step

  • Learn the signal chain: understand how sound travels from microphone through preamp, through mixer, to speaker or DAW. This fundamental knowledge underpins all audio engineering
  • Download Audacity (free) or GarageBand (free on Apple) and record something — anything — then practise adjusting EQ and volume to improve it
  • Research SAE Institute Africa locations — they offer professional sound engineering diplomas with campuses in South Africa and other African countries
  • Visit a recording studio in your city and ask if you can observe a session — watching professional engineers work is the most valuable education available
