Music Producer

Music creation and production — Afrobeats, Afropop

What this life looks like

You build the sonic world that defines an era. Music Producers create, arrange, and produce recorded music — crafting the beats, melodies, harmonies, and overall sound that artists perform and audiences love. Africa's music industry is a global cultural force: Afrobeats, Amapiano, and Afropop are shaping popular music worldwide, and the producers behind these sounds are among the most creative and commercially successful people in the global music industry.

What she actually does

You compose beats and musical arrangements in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), collaborate with artists and songwriters to develop tracks, direct recording sessions, mix recorded elements into a polished track, oversee the production from the initial idea to the final master, manage producer credits and royalty agreements, and build relationships with artists, managers, and record labels.

Why it matters in Africa

Amapiano from South Africa, Bongo Flava from Tanzania, and Ethio-jazz are all globally consumed. African music production is a genuine industry with international revenue streams and cultural influence.

A woman in this field

Simi

Nigeria

Simi is one of Nigeria's most beloved singer-songwriters — but she is also a music producer, composer, and record label founder. She writes and produces much of her own music and co-owns Studio Boku with her husband Adekunle Gold. She has demonstrated that African women can be complete music industry professionals — not just artists but producers, writers, and business owners. Her Afropop sound has earned her multiple AFRIMMA and Headies awards.

Take your first step

  • Download FL Studio (free trial version) or GarageBand (free on Mac/iPhone) and make your first beat today — even a simple drum pattern is a beginning
  • Study a track you love analytically — listen with headphones and identify the kick drum, snare, bassline, melody, and harmony separately. Understanding structure builds production instinct
  • Research BeatStars at beatstars.com — it is the platform where many African producers sell beats to artists globally
  • Follow African music producers on Instagram: Phantom (Burna Boy's producer), Killertunes, and the producers behind Amapiano will all teach you about their craft through their social media
