School Principal / Head Teacher

School leadership and management

What this life looks like

You lead the community where young lives are shaped. School Principals and Head Teachers are the educational and administrative leaders of schools — responsible for the quality of teaching and learning, the wellbeing of students, the professional development of teachers, community relationships, and the management of resources. A great principal can transform a school. A struggling one can set it back by years. School leadership is one of education's highest-leverage roles.

What she actually does

You set and communicate the school's educational vision, manage and develop the teaching staff, oversee curriculum implementation and examination performance, manage the school budget, maintain the physical environment, build relationships with parents and community members, handle student discipline and welfare, liaise with education authorities, and model the values of learning, integrity, and care that you want the school to embody.

Why it matters in Africa

African schools often face enormous resource constraints, teacher absenteeism, overcrowded classrooms, and community challenges that leadership must navigate daily. Research consistently shows that school leadership is the second most important factor in student outcomes after classroom teaching quality. Developing a generation of inspired, skilled African school principals is one of the highest-priority investments in education quality available.

A woman in this field

Ann Therese Ndong-Jatta

Gambia

Ann Therese served as Minister of Education of the Gambia and later as Director for Education in the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Africa in Dakar. She has spent decades working to improve school quality, leadership, and governance across African education systems. Her work on school principal training and educational accountability has influenced school leadership development programmes across the continent, and she is recognised as one of Africa's most important voices on educational transformation.

Take your first step

  • Talk to the principal of your school about what their role involves day-to-day — the realities of school leadership are very different from what you see from the outside
  • Research the Commonwealth Education Management Programme (CEMP) and similar leadership development programmes for African school leaders
  • Study the work of Michael Fullan on educational leadership — his books on school improvement are the most widely read in the field globally and his frameworks are being applied across Africa
  • Shadow a school principal for a day if possible — observing how they manage competing demands reveals what the role truly requires
