Renewable Energy Engineer
Solar, wind, and green energy solutions
What this life looks like
You are building Africa's energy future. Renewable Energy Engineers design, install, and optimize solar panels, wind turbines, biogas systems, and other clean energy technologies that can power Africa's development without damaging the climate. It is one of the fastest-growing and most exciting engineering careers on the continent.
What she actually does
You design solar photovoltaic systems for homes, clinics, and schools, develop wind energy projects, design mini-grids for rural communities, conduct energy resource assessments, manage renewable energy project development, ensure systems perform to specification, and work on grid integration of variable renewable energy sources.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| Off-Grid Solar Companies | M-KOPA (Kenya), SunKing (pan-African), BBOXX (Rwanda), Lumos (Nigeria) |
| Utility-Scale Developers | Scatec Solar Africa, Starsight Energy, CrossBoundary Energy, Globeleq |
| Governments & Development Banks | IRENA, Power Africa, Mission 300, African Development Bank energy portfolio |
| Energy Consulting | ENGIE Africa, Distributed Power Africa, Resource Group — renewable project development |
Why it matters in Africa
Africa receives more solar radiation than any other continent. The off-grid solar sector is growing explosively, with companies such as M-KOPA, SunKing, and BBOXX connecting millions of homes to clean energy. National governments and development banks are funding major renewable energy projects, creating enormous demand for skilled engineers.
