Refrigeration Technician

Cold chain and refrigeration systems

What this life looks like

You keep food fresh, medicines safe, and supply chains intact. Refrigeration Technicians install, maintain, and repair refrigeration systems — from household fridges to commercial cold rooms to the cold chain infrastructure that keeps vaccines, blood products, and food safe across Africa. As Africa builds out the cold chain infrastructure essential for food security and healthcare, this trade has become one of the continent's most strategically important.

What she actually does

You install and service refrigeration units — domestic, commercial, and industrial, diagnose and repair faults in cooling systems, handle refrigerant gases safely and in compliance with regulations, maintain cold rooms, freezer units, and refrigerated transport, monitor and calibrate temperature control systems, and ensure systems meet food safety and pharmaceutical storage standards where applicable.

Where you can work

SectorPlaces in Africa
Food IndustryCold storage facilities, supermarkets, food processing plants, and agricultural cold chain across Africa
HealthcareHospital and pharmacy cold chain for vaccines, blood products, and medicines — critical infrastructure roles
Logistics & TransportRefrigerated transport companies serving food distribution and export markets
Self-EmployedDomestic appliance repair businesses — refrigerator and freezer servicing for households across Africa

Why it matters in Africa

Up to 40% of food produced in Africa is lost due to inadequate cold chain infrastructure — representing a massive economic and food security loss that refrigeration technicians directly address. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical importance of cold chain for vaccine distribution across Africa, and ongoing investment in healthcare cold chain infrastructure continues. Refrigeration technicians are essential to both food security and health system functioning.

Your pathway in

  • Complete a refrigeration trade qualification through a TVET college — often combined with HVAC training
  • Develop deep knowledge of refrigeration cycles, compressors, and refrigerant types
  • Pursue refrigerant handling certification, which is increasingly mandatory given environmental regulations on refrigerant gases
  • Build experience across different applications: domestic appliances, commercial cold rooms, and transport refrigeration each have distinct requirements
  • Consider specialising in pharmaceutical or food cold chain for higher-value, mission-critical work

Skills you will need

  • Refrigeration system installation and repair
  • Refrigerant handling and environmental compliance
  • Temperature control and calibration
  • Cold chain standards (food and pharmaceutical)
  • Electrical diagnostics
  • Preventive maintenance planning

A woman in this field

Ms. Sonya Pouncy

U.S.A

Ms. Sonya Pouncy is a highly accomplished mechanical engineer, energy consultant, and prominent leader within the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry. Based out of Detroit, Michigan, she is widely recognized for her advocacy for energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and women working in STEM fields. She leads Building Vitals, LLC, a consultancy that helps facility owners design and optimize healthy, energy-efficient indoor environments. She serves as a senior engineer and energy management consultant with organizations like the Newman Consulting Group.

Take your first step

  • Research refrigeration and HVAC combined trade courses at TVET institutions — these fields are often taught together given their overlapping technical foundations
  • Practise basic appliance diagnostics if you have access to a non-functioning refrigerator — understanding compressors, thermostats, and refrigerant lines through hands-on observation builds foundational knowledge
  • Research the scale of post-harvest food loss in your country due to inadequate cold chain — organisations like the African Postharvest Losses Information System (APHLIS) publish data that shows the scale of this challenge
  • Look for apprenticeship opportunities with appliance repair businesses or cold chain logistics companies — practical experience with real refrigeration systems is essential
