Electrician

Electrical installation and maintenance

What this life looks like

You bring power safely into homes, businesses, and industry. Electricians install, maintain, and repair the electrical systems that everything else depends on — wiring, lighting, distribution boards, motors, and increasingly solar and battery systems. With over 600 million Africans still lacking access to electricity, and rapid electrification underway across the continent, electricians are among the most consistently employable skilled tradespeople in Africa.

What she actually does

You read electrical plans and wiring diagrams, install wiring, sockets, switches, and distribution boards in new and existing buildings, diagnose and repair electrical faults, test circuits for safety and compliance, install lighting and power systems, connect appliances and machinery, and ensure all work complies with national electrical codes and safety standards.

Where you can work

SectorPlaces in Africa
Construction CompaniesBuilding contractors across all African countries — every construction project needs electrical installation
UtilitiesNational power utilities: Eskom (SA), KPLC (Kenya), NEPA/PHCN successors (Nigeria) — maintenance and connections
Industrial & MiningMining companies, manufacturing plants, factories — industrial electricians maintain production-critical systems
Self-EmployedMany electricians build successful independent businesses serving residential and commercial clients

Why it matters in Africa

Africa's electrification rate is rising rapidly through grid extension, mini-grids, and off-grid solar — all of which require electricians for installation and maintenance. Every new building, factory, school, and hospital needs wiring. As industrialisation accelerates and renewable energy expands, demand for qualified electricians significantly outpaces supply across the continent, making this one of the most secure trade careers available.

Your pathway in

  • Complete a TVET electrical trade qualification (National Certificate, NQF Level 2-4 in SA, or equivalent trade certificate)
  • Complete an apprenticeship under a qualified electrician — supervised practical hours are required for trade certification
  • Pass your trade test to become a qualified/certified electrician
  • Register with your country's electrical regulatory body where required
  • Consider specialising in industrial wiring, solar PV installation, or instrumentation for higher earning potential

Skills you will need

  • Electrical wiring and circuit installation
  • Fault diagnosis and testing
  • Electrical code compliance
  • Reading technical drawings
  • Safety procedures (lockout/tagout)
  • Customer communication

A woman in this field

Ijeoma Egbulefu

Nigeria

Ijeoma Egbulefu is a prominent Nigerian female electrician and electrical installer based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. She gained widespread recognition in July 2022 after being featured in a profile by BBC News Pidgin that highlighted her journey breaking into a male-dominated field. Before venturing into electrical engineering, she returned to her village to work on a farm with her parents due to a lack of immediate financial resources to fund her higher education. She used her agricultural work to transition into vocational training, learning electrical house wiring and installation. Her primary objective was to save money from her trade to eventually sponsor her university education.

Take your first step

  • Research TVET colleges near you offering electrical trade qualifications — ask about entry requirements, course duration, and apprenticeship placement support
  • Practise basic electrical safety: learn how a household circuit works, what a circuit breaker does, and how to safely identify electrical hazards — free introductory electrical courses are available on YouTube and Coursera
  • Find a qualified electrician in your community and ask if you can observe or assist on simple jobs — practical exposure is invaluable
  • Research the growing solar PV installation sector — organisations like the Global Solar Council publish information about training pathways into renewable energy electrical work
