Painter & Decorator

Surface preparation and painting

What this life looks like

You give buildings their finished face. Painters and Decorators apply paint, wallpaper, and decorative finishes to interior and exterior surfaces — protecting buildings from weather damage while creating the colours and finishes that define how spaces look and feel. It is a trade with low barriers to entry, strong demand in both residential and commercial markets, and genuine entrepreneurial potential across Africa's growing property sector.

What she actually does

You prepare surfaces for painting — cleaning, filling, sanding, and priming, select and mix paints and finishes to match specifications, apply paint using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment, hang wallpaper and apply decorative finishes, work safely at height using ladders and scaffolding, estimate quantities and costs for jobs, and ensure a clean, professional finish that meets client expectations.

Why it matters in Africa

Every new building needs painting, and every existing building needs repainting periodically — making this one of the most consistently available trades across Africa's residential and commercial property markets. The growth of Africa's middle class and the expanding commercial property sector — offices, retail, hospitality — create steady demand. Painting is also one of the most accessible self-employment pathways, requiring relatively low startup capital compared to other trades.

A woman in this field

Esther Mahlangu

South Africa

Esther Nikwambi Mahlangu is a South African artist known for her bold, large-scale paintings inspired by her Ndebele heritage. Raised on a farm in the Mpumalanga region, she began painting as a child but did not receive critical recognition until the late 1980s. She is one of the most prominent contemporary practitioners of Ndebele house painting and has brought international attention to the art form by adapting its style to alternative materials such as canvas, metal, and clothing.

Take your first step

  • Research short painting and decorating courses at community skills centres — many are free or low-cost and provide foundational training in weeks rather than years
  • Practise on a small project if possible — painting a room in your home gives you direct experience with preparation, application, and finishing
  • Research paint types and their uses: understanding the difference between water-based and oil-based paints, primers, and exterior versus interior products is foundational knowledge
  • Look into SEDA (Small Enterprise Development Agency, South Africa) or your country's equivalent small business support agency — many offer support specifically for trades-based small businesses
