Network Engineer
Computer network design and management
What this life looks like
You build and maintain the infrastructure that connects the world. Network Engineers design, implement, and manage the computer networks — from local office networks to national telecommunications infrastructure — that allow data, calls, and internet access to flow. In Africa, you are building the backbone of the digital economy.
What she actually does
You design network topologies, configure routers and switches, manage bandwidth and performance, troubleshoot connectivity issues, implement network security, plan for capacity growth, and ensure networks remain available 24 hours a day. In telecoms companies, you may manage networks spanning entire countries or the submarine cables connecting Africa to the world.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| Mobile Network Operators | MTN Group, Airtel Africa, Safaricom, Orange Africa, Glo — national network operations |
| Internet Service Providers | Liquid Intelligent Technologies, MainOne (Equinix), Seacom — fibre and broadband |
| Banks & Corporates | Standard Bank, Ecobank, Shoprite — enterprise network management teams |
| Government & National Infrastructure | National ICT agencies, broadband expansion projects (Nigeria USPF, Kenya Universal Service Fund) |
Why it matters in Africa
Expanding internet connectivity is one of Africa's most critical infrastructure priorities. Fibre optic networks, submarine cables, mobile network expansion, and satellite internet projects are all driving demand for network engineers who can design, build, and maintain Africa's digital highways.
Your pathway in
- Study Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Information Technology at university
- Obtain Cisco certifications — CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) is the industry starting point
- Gain hands-on experience through lab practise using free tools such as Cisco Packet Tracer
- Work towards advanced certifications: CCNP for senior roles, CCIE for expert-level recognition
- Develop expertise in network security as security skills significantly increase your value
Skills you will need
- Routing and switching (Cisco, Juniper)
- Network protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF)
- Network security and firewalls
- Wireless networking (LTE, 5G)
- Monitoring tools (Nagios, PRTG)
- Problem-solving under pressure
A woman in this field
Funke Opeke
Nigeria
Funke is the founder of MainOne, which built West Africa's first private submarine cable and major data centre network. With a degree in electrical engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University and a career at major US telecoms companies, she returned to Nigeria and built the fibre and data centre infrastructure that powers the internet for millions across West Africa. Forbes named her among the World's Top 50 Women in Tech.
