Mobile App Developer
iOS and Android applications
What this life looks like
You build the apps that live on billions of phones. Mobile App Developers create the applications people use every day for banking, health, transport, entertainment, and communication. In Africa — where mobile is the primary internet device for most people — this is one of the most impactful technical careers you can pursue.
What she actually does
You design and build applications for Android and iOS devices, write code using languages such as Kotlin (Android), Swift (iOS), or cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter and React Native, test your apps on real devices, submit them to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and maintain and update them based on user feedback.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| Fintech & Mobile Money | M-Pesa/Safaricom, MTN Mobile Money, OPay, PalmPay, Chipper Cash |
| Health Tech | Healthtracka, mDoc, Helium Health, SafeBoda Medical — mobile health platforms |
| E-Commerce & Logistics | Jumia, Glovo Africa, Kobo360, Sendy — mobile-first delivery and commerce |
| Telecoms | Airtel Africa, MTN Group, Vodacom — large in-house mobile app development teams |
Why it matters in Africa
Africa has over 500 million smartphone users and the number is growing rapidly. Mobile-first products in fintech, agritech, health, and education are transforming African lives. Every major African innovation — from M-Pesa to Farmcrowdy to mDoc — is delivered through a mobile app.

- App Store submission process
- Testing on multiple device types
- Performance optimisation for low-end devices
A woman in this field
Ifeoluwa Dare-Johnson
Nigeria
Ifeoluwa is the CEO of Healthtracka, a health tech startup decentralising access to medical diagnostics across Africa through at-home testing delivered via a mobile app. After her father suffered a stroke, she built a platform so other Africans could access preventive health testing without going to hospital. Healthtracka has served thousands of users across Nigeria.
