Geospatial Analyst / GIS Specialist
Mapping and spatial data analysis
What this life looks like
You see the world through maps and spatial data. Geospatial Analysts collect, analyse, and visualise location-based data to solve problems in health, agriculture, urban planning, disaster management, and conservation. With satellite imagery, drones, and big data all generating location information, this skill set has never been more powerful or in demand.
What she actually does
You create and maintain geographic information system (GIS) databases, produce maps and spatial visualisations, analyse spatial patterns in data (disease distribution, crop yield variation, population density), process satellite and drone imagery, support planning and logistics with location intelligence, and communicate findings through compelling visual outputs.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| Government | National mapping agencies (Department of Survey and Mapping), urban planning departments, environment ministries |
| NGOs & Humanitarian | WFP, UNHCR, MSF — using satellite data for food security and humanitarian response |
| Conservation & Environment | African Wildlife Foundation, IUCN — forest and wildlife monitoring programmes |
| Tech & Data Companies | Esri Africa, Digital Earth Africa, spatial analytics startups |
Why it matters in Africa
GIS is being used across Africa for malaria mapping, crop monitoring, urban planning, conflict analysis, and infrastructure planning. The continent generates vast amounts of spatial data through mobile networks, satellite imagery, and field surveys — but lacks enough GIS specialists to analyse it. Every government ministry, NGO, and environmental agency needs GIS skills.
Your pathway in
- Study Geography, Mathematics, and Computer Science at school
- Pursue a degree in Geography, Geomatics, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Gain proficiency in GIS software — QGIS is free and open source; ArcGIS is the industry standard
- Develop remote sensing skills for satellite and drone image analysis
- Build a portfolio of GIS maps and spatial analysis projects using public data
Skills you will need
- GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Remote sensing and satellite image processing
- Spatial data analysis
- Cartography and map design
- Python or R for spatial analysis
- Database management
Take your first step
- Download QGIS for free at qgis.org and follow beginner tutorials on YouTube
- Explore Google Earth and think about what patterns you see in land use and geography around your home
- Research geography or geomatics degree programmes at universities in your country
- Follow Digital Earth Africa at digitalearthafrica.org to see GIS applications across the continent
