Remote Sensing Specialist
Satellite and aerial data analysis
What this life looks like
You extract information about the Earth from satellite and aerial imagery. Remote Sensing Specialists process and interpret images captured from satellites, aircraft, and drones to monitor land use, track deforestation, map flood extents, assess crop health, and support disaster response. It is a career that lets you observe the entire African continent from above.
What she actually does
You acquire satellite and drone imagery, process raw image data using specialised software, classify land cover and detect changes over time, extract environmental and agricultural metrics from imagery, create maps and visualisations, integrate remote sensing data with GIS systems, and support decision-making in agriculture, conservation, urban planning, and humanitarian response.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| Government Agencies | National mapping agencies, SANSA South Africa, agriculture and environment ministries |
| International Organisations | WFP, FAO, UNHCR — using satellite data for humanitarian response across Africa |
| Conservation Organisations | WWF, AWF, IUCN — forest and wildlife monitoring programmes using satellite data |
| Private Sector | Digital Earth Africa, Planet Labs Africa partners, precision agriculture tech companies |
Why it matters in Africa
Satellite data is transforming how Africa is managed — from early warning systems for droughts and locust swarms, to deforestation monitoring in the Congo Basin, to urban growth mapping in megacities. The World Food Programme uses satellite data to guide food aid distribution. African remote sensing specialists are urgently needed.

A woman in this field
Dr. Catherine Nakalembe
Uganda
Catherine is a Ugandan remote sensing scientist and Africa Program Lead for NASA Harvest — NASA's food and agriculture initiative. She uses satellite data to monitor crop conditions across Africa, providing early warning of food crises and informing responses to drought and conflict. She was named one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2022 for her work using satellite data to protect African food security.
