Cruise Director

Entertainment and programming on cruise ships

What this life looks like

You are the entertainment and experience leader of a floating resort. Cruise Directors manage all onboard entertainment, activities, and guest programming on cruise ships — from lectures and shows to shore excursions and themed events — creating the social experience that makes a cruise memorable. While the global cruise industry is not yet based in Africa, African ports — Cape Town, Mombasa, Casablanca, Durban, and Alexandria — are increasingly included on cruise itineraries, and African hospitality professionals are finding careers in the international cruise industry.

What she actually does

You develop and manage the daily entertainment and activity programme, lead a team of entertainment staff including dancers, musicians, and activities coordinators, host events and shows, manage shore excursion programmes, communicate with senior ship management, handle guest complaints related to entertainment and activities, ensure all programming aligns with the ship's brand standards, and create the social atmosphere that keeps passengers engaged and happy throughout their voyage.

Why it matters in Africa

While most cruise ships are operated by European and North American companies, they increasingly include African ports and destinations — particularly Cape Town, the East African coast, the Red Sea, and Nile River cruises. African hospitality professionals who join cruise lines gain extraordinary international experience, language skills, and career development opportunities. Several major cruise lines — MSC, Costa, and others — actively recruit from South Africa, Nigeria, and other African countries.

A woman in this field

Kemi Roberts

Nigeria/International

Kemi is a Nigerian entertainment and hospitality professional who built a career in the international cruise industry — progressing from activities coordinator to cruise entertainment manager across multiple major cruise lines. She is one of a growing number of West African hospitality professionals who have built successful careers in the global cruise industry, returning to Nigeria as advocates for the cruise industry as a career pathway for young African hospitality graduates. Her experience demonstrates that African hospitality professionals can compete and succeed in the most demanding global environments.

Take your first step

  • Research the major cruise lines' African recruitment: MSC Cruises recruits significantly from South Africa and their recruitment process and requirements are publicly available
  • Study what a cruise entertainment programme looks like: research cruise line websites and watch cruise director content on YouTube — understanding the breadth of programming involved clarifies what the role requires
  • Develop a performance skill: hosting, comedy, dance, singing, or public speaking — cruise directors are performers as much as managers, and demonstrating performing confidence is essential for recruitment
  • Research the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) at cruising.org — they are the global cruise industry body and publish career resources for people entering the cruise industry
