Backend Developer
Server-side and database development
What this life looks like
You build the engine that powers digital products. Backend Developers create and maintain the servers, databases, and application logic that users never see but always rely on — from processing payments to storing health records to managing user accounts.
What she actually does
You design and build APIs — the bridges between frontend interfaces and databases — manage databases, write server-side code, handle authentication and security, optimize system performance, and ensure the application handles thousands of simultaneous users reliably. You work in languages including Python, Node.js, Java, Go, or PHP.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| Fintech Companies | Flutterwave, Paystack, OPay, Paga, Remita — all have large backend engineering teams |
| E-Commerce Platforms | Jumia, Takealot, Konga — processing millions of daily transactions |
| Healthcare Tech | Helium Health, mDoc, Vezeeta — building patient record and telemedicine platforms |
| Remote Opportunities | Andela network, Turing, and direct remote roles with global companies |
Why it matters in Africa
Every fintech app, e-commerce platform, and digital health service running in Africa needs robust backend systems. As African startups scale from thousands to millions of users, demand for experienced backend developers who can build reliable, secure, high-performance systems is intense.
Your pathway in
- Study Computer Science or Software Engineering at university, or complete a recognised bootcamp
- Learn Python or Node.js as your first backend language — both have excellent free learning resources
- Understand databases — both SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Firebase)
- Learn how to build and consume REST APIs — the backbone of modern backend development
- Build projects that demonstrate database design, authentication, and API development
Skills you will need
- Server-side languages (Python, Node.js, Java)
- Database design and SQL
- API design and development
- Security and authentication
- Cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- System design thinking
A woman in this field
Adaora Nwodo
Nigeria
Adaora, known as AdoraHack, is a Platform Engineer at Stackoverflow, former Software Engineer at Microsoft, and an award-winning tech creator. She has built a following of over 6,000 engineers through her YouTube channel and blog, teaching backend and cloud engineering to the next generation of African developers. She won the Young CISO Network excellence in disruptive tech award in 2022 and serves as VP of the VR/AR Nigerian chapter.
Take your first step
- Learn Python basics for free on python.org or freeCodeCamp — target the backend web development path
- Build a simple REST API that stores and retrieves data from a database
- Learn about SQL by taking the free SQLZoo or Mode Analytics tutorial
- Research backend engineering bootcamps in your country such as Decagon or Semicolon Africa
