Web3 Developer

Decentralised web applications

What this life looks like

You build the decentralised applications that are creating a new architecture for the internet. Web3 developers create the front-end and back-end of applications that interact with blockchains — wallets, exchanges, NFT marketplaces, DeFi protocols, and DAO governance systems. It is a technically demanding but extraordinarily well-compensated specialisation, with a global talent shortage and a developer community that collaborates openly across borders.

What she actually does

You build the user interfaces and application logic for decentralised applications, integrate blockchain smart contracts with web frontends using libraries like Web3.js and Ethers.js, develop wallet connection functionality, build token transaction interfaces, work with IPFS for decentralised data storage, test and audit dApp security, and collaborate in open-source blockchain projects globally.

Where you can work

SectorPlaces in Africa
Web3 StartupsAfrican and global Web3 startups — remote work is the overwhelming norm in the Web3 ecosystem
Protocol TeamsDeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and infrastructure projects employing full-time developers
FreelanceGitcoin, Bounties Network, and DAOs pay developers for specific contributions — accessible from Africa
Traditional TechBanks, telecoms, and enterprise companies exploring Web3 integration employ Web3 developers

Why it matters in Africa

Africa's Web3 developer community is small but growing rapidly — particularly in Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana. Web3 development is distinctive in that it is almost entirely remote and open-source — an African developer with strong skills can contribute to and be paid by projects anywhere in the world. African Web3 projects are also emerging: cross-border payment infrastructure, digital identity systems, and decentralised savings are all being built by African teams for African markets.

Your pathway in

  • Master JavaScript and React first — Web3 development builds on strong traditional web development foundations
  • Study Ethers.js or Web3.js — the primary libraries for connecting web applications to Ethereum and other blockchains
  • Build a portfolio of dApps: connect a wallet, display NFTs, and interact with a smart contract in a web interface — these common tasks demonstrate Web3 developer competence
  • Participate in hackathons: Ethereum, Solana, and other ecosystems run frequent online hackathons with prize funds that are accessible from anywhere in Africa
  • Join Web3Africa and Moralis communities — they are active, include African developers, and provide learning resources and networking

Skills you will need

  • JavaScript/React for frontend
  • Ethers.js or Web3.js
  • Smart contract integration
  • IPFS and decentralised storage
  • Wallet connection (WalletConnect, MetaMask)
  • Testing and security principles for dApps

A woman in this field

Oluchi Enebeli

Nigeria

Oluchi Enebeli is widely recognized as Nigeria's first female blockchain engineer and is a prominent tech leader, entrepreneur, and advocate for female inclusion in the Web3 space across Africa. She is currently based in Dubai, UAE, serving as a Founding Principal Engineer at Wio Bank, where she focuses on building decentralized finance (DeFi) and crypto banking infrastructure.

Take your first step

  • Complete the Alchemy University Web3 Development curriculum at alchemy.com/university — it is free, structured, and one of the most respected introductions to Web3 development globally
  • Build a simple dApp that connects to MetaMask wallet and reads blockchain data — this basic project demonstrates core Web3 skills and gives you something to show in your portfolio
  • Join Web3Africa at web3africa.dev and Nigerian/African blockchain developer communities on Discord — community learning is how most Web3 developers develop their skills
  • Participate in a Web3 hackathon: ETHGlobal events are available online and offer prize funding even to developers who do not win — the projects you build are valuable portfolio pieces
