Water Resources Engineer
Clean water systems — critical across Africa
What this life looks like
You solve one of Africa's most urgent challenges: access to clean, reliable water. Water Resources Engineers design and manage the systems that collect, treat, and distribute water to communities, manage floods and droughts, and ensure that water — the foundation of life — reaches everyone who needs it.
What she actually does
You design dams, reservoirs, water treatment plants, and distribution networks, model river systems to predict floods and droughts, manage irrigation systems for agriculture, assess groundwater resources, plan water allocation across competing users, and design stormwater management systems for growing cities.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| Water Utilities | Lagos Water Corporation, Nairobi City Water, Rand Water (South Africa), NWSC Uganda |
| Government Ministries | Water resources ministries, National Irrigation Authorities, river basin authorities |
| Engineering Consulting | SMEC Africa, WRP Consulting Engineers, Zutari — water infrastructure design |
| International Development | World Bank, African Development Bank, UNICEF, GIZ — water and sanitation programmes |
Why it matters in Africa
Over 400 million Africans lack access to safe drinking water, and climate change is intensifying droughts, floods, and water scarcity. Water resources engineering is among the most critically needed technical disciplines on the continent, supported by major investment from the African Development Bank, World Bank, and bilateral donors.
Your pathway in
- Study Civil Engineering with a water resources specialisation, or Hydraulic Engineering, at university
- Gain practical experience through internships with water utilities or engineering firms
- Learn hydrological modelling software such as HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS
- Develop GIS skills for watershed analysis and mapping
- Register with your national engineering body and consider Water Institute memberships
Skills you will need
- Hydraulic modelling (HEC-HMS, SWMM)
- Water treatment process design
- GIS and remote sensing
- Project management
- Community engagement for water projects
- Environmental and regulatory compliance
A woman in this field
Hauwa Muhammed Sadique
Nigeria
Hauwa is a Nigerian civil and water engineer who rose to become Chief Engineer in the Dams and Reservoir Operations Department in Kano, under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources. She has dedicated her career to water resource management in northern Nigeria, a region facing acute water scarcity, and has championed the empowerment of women in engineering throughout her career.
Take your first step
- Study Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Geography or Earth Sciences at school
- Research civil engineering or water engineering degree programmes at universities in your country
- Follow the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) at amcow-online.org to understand the policy context
- Learn about your local water utility — how is water treated and distributed in your community?
