Stylist / Fashion Stylist
Styling for editorial and performance
What this life looks like
You dress the image. Fashion Stylists select and coordinate clothing, accessories, and looks for fashion shoots, film and television productions, music videos, red carpet events, and advertising campaigns. As Africa's fashion industry, entertainment sector, and social media culture have grown, the demand for skilled stylists who understand African aesthetics and can dress Africa's stars has expanded significantly.
What she actually does
You receive a brief from a photographer, director, or client, research and develop a visual concept for the styling, source clothes from designers, brands, fashion houses, and vintage sources, style looks on models or celebrities, collaborate with the hair and makeup team, select final looks during fittings, oversee styling on set or at events, and return borrowed items after the shoot.
Where you can work
| Sector | Places in Africa |
|---|---|
| Music Industry | Styling Afrobeats and Amapiano artists for music videos, tours, and media appearances — vibrant market |
| Fashion Editorial | African fashion magazines: True Love, Drum, Vogue Africa — editorial styling for fashion stories |
| Film & Television | Nollywood, South African drama, EbonyLife productions — wardrobe and styling support |
| Celebrity Clients | Private styling for African business executives, politicians, sports personalities, and entertainers |
Why it matters in Africa
Africa's growing celebrity culture — Afrobeats artists, Nollywood stars, fashion influencers, and sports personalities — creates constant demand for professional stylists for red carpet events, music videos, and editorial shoots. African Fashion Week productions need stylists who understand the continent's designers. And the global fashion industry's growing interest in African designers creates new opportunities for African stylists at international events.
