What this life looks like
You grow people's capabilities for a living. Learning and Development (L&D) Specialists design and deliver training programmes that help employees develop new skills, knowledge, and behaviours. As the pace of change in African workplaces accelerates — driven by digital transformation, new regulations, and evolving business models — investment in employee learning has never been more strategically important.
What she actually does
You assess learning needs through surveys and consultations, design training programmes and e-learning content, facilitate workshops and classroom sessions, manage learning management systems (LMS), evaluate training effectiveness, manage external training providers, and align learning strategy with business goals. Modern L&D blends in-person, digital, and peer learning approaches.

Why it matters in Africa
Africa's workforce is young and growing, but the skills gap between what education produces and what employers need is significant. Companies and development organisations are investing heavily in workforce development. The rise of digital learning platforms — from Coursera to Andela's learning networks — is creating new opportunities for L&D specialists who can design for Africa's learning context.
