Criminal Defense Attorney

Criminal law representation

What this life looks like

You stand between the state and the individual. Criminal Defense Attorneys represent people accused of crimes, ensuring they receive a fair trial and that the prosecution must prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. It is one of the most challenging and morally important areas of legal practice — the cornerstone of every functioning justice system.

What she actually does

You advise clients from the moment of arrest, apply for bail, challenge unlawful evidence, cross-examine prosecution witnesses, make legal arguments before judges, negotiate plea agreements, present mitigating factors during sentencing, and appeal convictions. You must hold firm under pressure and represent clients whose cases may be deeply unpopular.

Why it matters in Africa

Africa's criminal justice systems face enormous challenges — overcrowded prisons, lengthy pre-trial detention, limited legal aid, and police misconduct. Skilled criminal defense lawyers who protect constitutional rights and hold prosecutors and police to account are essential to justice and democracy. This is one of the most socially impactful areas of law practice on the continent.

A woman in this field

Olayinka Adeyemi

Nigeria

Olayinka runs the Office of the Public Defender for Lagos State, which provides a lawyer to people who cannot pay for one. She was called to the Nigerian bar in 1991 and spent her first decade on the other side, as a prosecutor in the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, rising to Chief State Counsel before moving across to defence in 2004. She holds a master of laws from the University of Lagos and took advanced criminal defence training with the National Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers in the United States. Most of the people she defends would otherwise face the court alone.

Take your first step

  • Watch recordings of criminal trial proceedings at your local high court — observing real trials is the best introduction to criminal practice
  • Study the Bill of Rights in your country's constitution — criminal defense rests on these fundamental protections
  • Research what Legal Aid is in your country and how it provides access to justice for people who cannot afford lawyers
  • Read 'Just Mercy' by Bryan Stevenson — one of the most powerful accounts of criminal defense practice ever written
