Community Manager

Online community building and engagement

What this life looks like

You build and nurture the communities that make brands, platforms, and causes come alive. Community Managers foster engagement within online communities — Discord servers, Facebook groups, WhatsApp communities, and brand forums — turning passive followers into active participants and advocates. As African brands and movements increasingly understand that community is a competitive advantage, skilled community builders are in growing demand.

What she actually does

You design the structure and culture of online communities, create and enforce community guidelines, produce content that sparks discussion, welcome and integrate new members, moderate conversations, identify and elevate community leaders, organise events and activities, gather community feedback for product teams, manage community crises diplomatically, and measure community health through engagement metrics.

Why it matters in Africa

Africa's internet users are among the world's most community-oriented — WhatsApp groups, Facebook communities, and emerging Discord servers around African gaming, music, tech, and business are deeply active. African startups, NGOs, and movements are recognising that an engaged community is more valuable than a large passive following. Community managers who understand African social dynamics, languages, and cultural contexts are building some of the most vibrant digital communities on the continent.

A woman in this field

Ada Nduka Oyom

Nigeria

Ada is the founder of She Code Africa — a community of over 62,000 women across 20+ African countries learning to code — and Open Source Community Africa. She has also served as Developer Relations lead at Google, GitHub, and Interswitch, building and managing developer communities at scale. Her career is one of Africa's most powerful examples of community-building as a professional discipline and a force for structural change — she did not just build a community, she built one of the continent's most impactful technical empowerment movements for women. She demonstrates that community management done with purpose and excellence can change careers and lives at scale.

Take your first step

  • Research She Code Africa at shecodeafrica.org — Ada Nduka Oyom's community is one of the best-documented examples of community-building at scale in Africa, and studying how it was built gives you insight into community management practice
  • Volunteer to help manage an online community you are already a member of — every active WhatsApp group, Facebook group, or Discord server benefits from someone who takes on moderation and engagement intentionally
  • Study CMX Hub at cmxhub.com — it is the global community for community professionals and their free resources cover community strategy, metrics, and management practice comprehensively
  • Build your own small community around a topic you care about — even 50 active members in a Discord or WhatsApp group gives you direct experience of the dynamics, challenges, and rewards of community management
