Airline Cabin Crew / Flight Attendant
In-flight passenger service
What this life looks like
You provide safety and service in the sky. Airline Cabin Crew are the safety and hospitality professionals who manage passenger wellbeing on commercial flights — from safety demonstrations and emergency procedure management to in-flight service, passenger support, and creating the onboard experience that defines an airline's brand. For many young Africans, a cabin crew career offers a pathway to international travel, professional development, and a well-structured career in aviation.
What she actually does
You conduct pre-flight safety checks, brief passengers on safety procedures, manage emergency situations (medical emergencies, evacuations, turbulence), provide in-flight catering and beverage service, assist passengers with special needs, manage onboard sales, resolve passenger complaints, maintain the cabin environment, and uphold the airline's brand and service standards throughout the flight.

Take your first step
- Research Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and RwandAir's recruitment requirements for cabin crew — they each publish their application criteria and processes publicly, and understanding what airlines look for is your first step
- Study the aviation safety regulations that govern cabin crew: the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) safety framework applies to all airlines globally and understanding it gives you context for the safety role cabin crew perform
- Develop your swimming ability if it needs improvement — most airlines require cabin crew to pass a swimming test as part of safety certification
- Practice your English communication skills and consider beginning a second language: French (essential for many African routes), Arabic, or Mandarin all add significant value to a cabin crew application
